News from the Top of the World!

Wild Weather Comes to Leadville!

Quick camera action by our bookkeeper, Marsha Carter, captured this cold funnel cloud that formed in front of Mt. Massive on 6/13/2010 and it looks like it was headed towards our office.  Fortunately this rare weather phenomena does not touch the ground.

Jack had the opportunity on two consecutive days to bike up Independence Pass before it opened to car traffic for Memorial Day weekend. His friends (and past clients) offered some extra incentive for training by attaching their Tagalong to his bike. Their six-year-old daughter provided extra horse power and delightful observations (eg: "shadows are only two dimensional!")

The Colorado Department of Transportation has plowed the Leadville side of Independence Pass, and opened the Aspen side just in time for Memorial Day weekend through  formidable walls of snow. Yes, the elevation is really 12,095 feet!

Training paid off as Jack beat the train in a 50-mile race from Durango to Silverton!

And two days later, Jack (left) ran the "Bolder Boulder" in, where else?
The "People's Republic" of Boulder, Colorado!  Jack is shown here with daughter Kelsey and friend, Jason just before the start of the 10K run with 54,000 other fitness fanatics.

Saunders Company hosts Capital Campaign for Colorado Mountain College
An esteemed group of community leaders makes up the cabinet to continue raising money for the new Climax Leadership Center, the newest building on the campus in Leadville. Pictured above at a recent gathering at the Saunders Company hedquarters are Bob Hartzell, John Wells, Colleen Hannon, Mayor Bud Elliot, Pat Clouber, Jack Saunders, Dano Aldaz and Wes Duran.  Because Jack is a member of the cabinet, he encourages you to contact him if you would like to support this great project which puts another jewel in Colorado Mountain College's Timberline Campus crown!

Saunders Company has organized a community recycling program at the Leadville Post Office.

Froelicher Hut Trip a Huge Success
Jack and friends made their annual pilgrimage in mid-March to one of the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association's "huts," the Sangree Froelicher cabin which is located north of Leadville. The cabin sits near the top of Buckeye Gulch offering a scenic and peaceful retreat from civilization. The group from all over the USA spent 3 days in the back country enjoying the sun, scenery, exercise and Jack's corny jokes (at least they were polite enough to laugh).

little skiing incident in which he tore his bicep tendon.
He was fortunate enough to postpone surgery
until after the Hut trip.

Jack Attends Builder 20 Meeting in Knoxville
Jack attended this semi-annual conference in February, where he and other custom home builders toured the host's single family construction projects. Jack brought back some great ideas he'd like to incoroporate into YOUR next home!

The Builder 20 group, organized by the National Association of Home Builders, has been together since 2003.  They get together twice a year and visit a member's business to see the homes they've built; to review financial, marketing and technical aspects of the home building industry; and share updates and news of each one's market.  Thirteen custom home builders from across the USA belong to this group.  Pictured here are builders from Vermont, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Michigan, Colorado (Jack) and Illinois.
